Lawyer Martin Kpebu recently voiced his opinion on the clash in Ghana’s parliament between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Speaker. He argued that the NPP’s leader, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, was attempting to divert attention from the party’s lack of numbers in the chamber.
Kpebu noted that the NPP struggled to gather enough MPs for a quorum and subsequently shifted blame onto the Speaker to obscure this issue.
Kpebu stated that the Speaker, who was present in the chamber, acted appropriately by adjourning the session since parliamentary business cannot proceed without a quorum, which the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) alone cannot fulfill.
He emphasized that the NPP’s reluctance to acknowledge their reduced numbers is creating frequent impasses in parliament. Kpebu called on the government and its MPs to prioritize attendance to facilitate necessary parliamentary proceedings, especially during this critical period.
