Afrobarometer Survey: Ghanaians Cite Unemployment as Top Concern, 82% Say Country on Wrong Track.

The latest Afrobarometer survey has revealed that unemployment remains the top concern among Ghanaians, with 41% of respondents urging the government to address this pressing issue.

The survey also highlighted widespread dissatisfaction with the country’s trajectory, as 82% of Ghanaians expressed the belief that Ghana is heading in the wrong direction.

Alongside unemployment, citizens indicated a strong desire for the government to prioritize improvements in infrastructure and healthcare.

These issues, respondents believe, are critical to improving quality of life and driving long-term economic stability.

Dr. Edem Selormey, Director of Research at the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), underscored the importance of these findings, noting that public priorities offer essential insight into areas where policy adjustments are urgently needed.

Dr. Selormey stressed that a government response addressing both unemployment and these essential services could play a pivotal role in restoring public confidence and putting Ghana on a more positive path.

Dr. Edem Selormey further, revealed that 52% of Ghanaians reported having to pay bribes to secure essential services, such as obtaining identity documents or accessing police or healthcare assistance. Additionally, 38% of citizens admitted to paying bribes specifically to avoid complications or confrontations with the police.

Dr. Selormey emphasized that these findings point to systemic challenges in public service delivery, where bribery has become a common, though troubling, practice for navigating necessary but difficult-to-access services.

The data suggests a critical need for reforms aimed at improving transparency, reducing corruption, and ensuring equitable access to public resources.
