Dede Ayew Joins NAC Breda in Bid for 2026 World Cup Return

Ghanaian football legend André “Dede” Ayew has officially joined Dutch Eredivisie club NAC Breda on a free transfer, marking a significant move as he eyes a potential return to the international stage ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

NAC Breda Confirms Ayew’s signing

The 36-year-old veteran forward, who had been without a club since departing Le Havre at the end of the 2024-25 season, signed a contract until the end of the current 2025-26 campaign, with an option for an additional year.

The announcement came on December 31, 2025, ending months of speculation about his next destination after he maintained fitness training with Nania FC, the Ghanaian club owned by his father, the iconic Abedi Pelé.

NAC Breda, currently languishing at the bottom of the Eredivisie table with just 13 points from 17 matches, view Ayew’s arrival as a crucial boost in their battle against relegation. The club’s technical director, Peter Maas, highlighted the Ghanaian’s eagerness to contribute, noting his proven track record in challenging situations.

Ayew himself expressed enthusiasm for the challenge, stating that he thrives in high-pressure environments and is committed to helping the team and its passionate supporters secure top-flight survival.

This transfer represents Ayew’s tenth professional club, adding the Netherlands to a career that has spanned France (Marseille, Lorient, Arles-Avignon, Le Havre), England (Swansea City, West Ham United, Nottingham Forest), Turkey (Fenerbahçe), and Qatar (Al-Sadd).

Known for his versatility, leadership, and experience in major tournaments, Ayew brings over 590 club appearances and more than 160 goals to Breda. On the international front, the move is widely seen as a strategic step to keep Ayew match-fit and in contention for a Black Stars recall.

With 120 caps and Ghana’s all-time record for appearances, the former captain has been absent from recent national team setups amid a youth-focused rebuild under coach Otto Addo. However, regular playing time in Europe could reopen the door for the 2026 World Cup, where Ghana faces a tough group against England, Croatia, and Panama.

Ayew joins compatriots Denis Odoi and Kamal Sowah at NAC Breda, whose home games are played at the Rat Verlegh Stadium.

Fans are optimistic that his vast experience— including multiple Africa Cup of Nations finals and three previous World Cups—could prove invaluable both for the club’s survival fight and Ghana’s ambitions on the global stage.
