Ghana’s Black Stars Gear Up for 2026 World Cup with Strategic European Friendly

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is intensifying preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with a key focus on scheduling a marquee international friendly against a top European nation in the months leading up to the tournament’s group-stage draw.

This move, aimed at honing the Black Stars’ competitive edge against high-caliber opposition, was highlighted by GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum during a recent video interview at a FIFA World Cup draw in Washington DC.

“We are likely to have a high-profile European friendly [before the World Cup draw] to ensure our players are battle-tested and ready to compete at the highest level.”he said in a mixed zone.

Twum emphasized the strategic importance of such matches in building team cohesion, tactical sharpness, and international exposure ahead of the expanded 48-team tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Black Stars were placed in Group L alongside powerhouses England, Croatia, and CONCACAF surprise package Panama. This matchup, immediately dubbed the tournament’s unofficial “Group of Death” by analysts, pits Africa’s pace and flair against Europe’s tactical mastery and a resilient underdog, setting the stage for what could be the most fiercely contested group in the expanded 48-team finals.

As confirmed across FIFA’s official proceedings and global coverage, Ghana (FIFA rank 72) joins Pot 1’s England (4) and Croatia (10) with Pot 3’s Panama (30), creating a bracket where only the top two advance automatically, plus the best third-placers.

Ghana will open their campaign against Panama. On June 11.
