261 24-Hour Markets To Strengthen Local Economies – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has said the construction of 24-Hour Markets across Ghana’s 261 constituencies will help strengthen the economic life of communities and provide farmers with reliable outlets for their produce.

He said the markets were designed not only as trading centres but also as important infrastructure to support local economic activity and improve the livelihoods of farmers and traders.

President Mahama made the remarks during an inspection of an ongoing 24-Hour Market project at Nadowli-Kaleo in the Upper West Region.

The inspection formed part of his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the region.

“We are constructing these 24-Hour Markets in all 261 constituencies,” the President said, commending the contractor working on the Nadowli-Kaleo project for the progress of work.

He said the completed markets would provide dedicated trading spaces for farmers producing a wide range of crops, including pepper, onions and maize.

According to President Mahama, many farmers currently face challenges securing reliable markets for their produce, making the construction of modern trading facilities important to the growth of local economies.

“These markets are going to strengthen the economic life of our communities,” he said.

He explained that farmers would be able to display their goods in appropriate trading spaces and earn decent incomes from their produce.

President Mahama urged contractors working on the other 24-Hour Market projects across the country to take inspiration from the progress being made at Nadowli.

He also acknowledged the strong interest of women in the project, noting that they stood to benefit significantly from the availability of improved trading facilities.

The President expressed confidence that the project would be completed successfully and promised to return to Nadowli with traditional leaders and other stakeholders to commission the completed market.

He said government would continue to invest in infrastructure that supports agriculture, trade and economic activity at the community level.

President Mahama stressed that the 261 markets formed part of the government’s broader efforts to create opportunities for farmers, traders and other local businesses to expand their economic activities.
