ACCRA, Ghana, 24th August: Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has disclosed that a total of 26 suspects have so far been put before the courts in connection with election-related violence recorded during Ghana’s 2020 and 2024 general elections.
According to the Minister, 25 of the suspects are currently standing trial, while one person has been discharged.
The update forms part of ongoing investigations initiated following President John Dramani Mahama’s directive on January 10, 2025, for thorough and impartial investigations into incidents of election-related violence during the two general elections.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series, Hon. Muntaka said the Inspector-General of Police subsequently constituted a Special Investigation Task Force under the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to investigate the cases.
He said the latest update builds on an earlier report presented on November 4, 2025, with investigations continuing to identify perpetrators and ensure that those responsible are prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Banda Case
In the Banda Constituency, the Minister disclosed that police investigations have led to the arrest of several suspects over the July 13, 2020 killing of Silas Wulochamey.
The incident followed clashes between supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the voter registration exercise.
Gabriel Yaw Agyei alias Abodie, identified as the prime suspect in the stabbing and killing, was arraigned before the Adabraka District Court on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and murder. He was subsequently granted bail by the Accra High Court.
His next court hearing is scheduled for August 31, 2026, while other suspects remain on police enquiry bail.
Offinso North Case
On the lynching of Jacob Nlor at Akomadan in the Offinso North Constituency following a confrontation between NPP and NDC supporters on December 9, 2024, Muntaka said six suspects have now been arrested.
All six have been put before the court, with their next appearance scheduled for September 3, 2026.
He added that a duplicate case docket has been submitted to the Attorney-General’s Office for study and advice, while police efforts continue to apprehend any remaining suspects.
Investigations Into Security Personnel
The Minister also provided updates on cases involving alleged shootings by security personnel during the 2024 elections.
At Nkoranza South, Lance Corporal Darkwah Dwamena Okyere has been identified as the soldier who shot Abdul Karim Rafik alias Tyson at a polling station. Sixteen soldiers were screened, with five identified as having been involved in the incident.
The investigation is awaiting a statement from the NPP Constituency Chairman, Clement Owusu, after which the docket will be forwarded to the Attorney-General’s Office for study and advice.
At Ahafo Ano South-West, investigations established that Dominic Nimo died from gunshot wounds sustained from security personnel during an alleged riot-control operation at the Mankranso collation centre. Eight of the 11 military personnel deployed there admitted firing warning shots, while armed police officers also acknowledged firing warning shots.
Police Still Pursuing Suspects
Hon. Muntaka said the police are continuing efforts to apprehend suspects who remain at large.
Among them is Alhaji Abdul-Latif Copshe, a prime suspect in the Nyankpala shooting incident in the Tolon Constituency. Police have issued a warrant for his arrest and published his name in the Police Gazette.
Thirteen other suspects connected to the various cases are also being pursued.
The Minister assured that the police would continue pursuing outstanding suspects while supporting the prosecution of those already before the courts.
He said the public would be informed of further developments as investigations and prosecutions progress.
