Accra, September 9, 2026 — Social commentator Joseph Awuku, popularly known as Joe Ashiaman, has alleged that Ghana’s school placement system is being deliberately manipulated by certain individuals to extort money from parents.
Speaking on the Adekye Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor 92.3FM in an interview with host Kofi Owusu, Joe Ashiaman claimed that the recurring cases of students being placed in schools far from their homes are not accidental errors, but part of an organised scheme.
“This school placement is a business for some people. Individuals are making money out of this school placement system. It’s not a mistake, it’s an intentional approach individuals are using to milk money from parents,” he said.
He questioned how a child living in Kasoa could be placed as a day student in a school in Kyebi, describing such outcomes as nothing short of “madness.”
“They do these errors intentionally, because if a child is misplaced in the school system and the parents visit these schools to rectify the errors, they pay money — huge sums of money — to get placed in the right schools. This is purely business people are doing, and it’s a deliberate thing,” he added.
Joe Ashiaman was emphatic that the issue was not confined to any political party, stressing that the problem persists regardless of which party is in government.
“It’s not either NPP or NDC,” he said.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the placement authorities to the allegations raised on the show.
