A 21-year-old illegal miner, identified as Wofa Jonathan, has died following a canoe accident on the Pra River at Twifo Kotokye in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region.
According to reports, the deceased had been sent to purchase diesel for illegal mining activities and was returning when the tragedy occurred. The canoe he was travelling in reportedly struck a rock in the river, causing it to capsize.
Jonathan, a resident of Twifo Pewodie, drowned in the incident. His body was later retrieved from the river and deposited at a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Police have launched investigations into the incident, although it remains unclear whether further action will be taken.
The Pra River has recorded several similar accidents in recent years, raising renewed concerns about unsafe river transportation and the risks associated with illegal mining activities along its banks.
