2024 Elections: The NPP is trickish but the NDC is wide awake – Former NDC National Organizer

Former National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joshua Hamidu Akamba, has strongly criticized the government’s decision to deploy military personnel to enforce a ban on grain exports in border towns across the country.

Mr. Akamba argues that this move is an unnecessary show of force that endangers the livelihoods of local farmers and traders, especially since there is no evidence suggesting that the Ghana Immigration Service cannot handle the situation.

He also expressed concerns that this deployment might be politically motivated, aimed at reducing voter turnout in opposition strongholds, particularly in border communities where the NDC has significant support.

He further criticized the financial implications of this deployment, suggesting that the cost might exceed the value of the grains the government aims to protect.

He recalled a similar situation before the 2020 elections when military personnel were deployed to border communities under the guise of COVID-19 restrictions, which he claimed prevented Ghanaian citizens from entering the country to vote.

In an interview on Ahotor FM’s morning show ‘Adekyee Mu Nsem,’ Mr. Akamba questioned the necessity of the deployment, stating, “This military deployment to enforce the ban on food exports is a political maneuver, not a genuine concern for food security. The NPP is simply trying to suppress voter turnout in border areas because they know they are losing the election.”
