Executive Vice President for Center for Policy and Foreign Engagement and BOT member President Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Agbai Eke Agbai PhD has indicated that, the last election Ghana held was not about the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) as people described it.
Agbai Eke Agbai’s perspective on the 2024 Ghana election offers a bold and critical analysis of the political landscape. He argues that the election wasn’t solely a contest between the NPP and NDC, but rather a battle between the governing party and the state, suggesting that the power dynamics were heavily influenced by institutional control.
His comments imply that despite the NPP’s significant investments in state institutions like the police, military, courts, and the Electoral Commission, the people of Ghana were still able to assert their will through the vote, signaling a strong rejection of perceived arrogance from the ruling government.
By drawing a parallel to the historical support that women gave to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Agbai emphasizes the people-driven nature of the election, especially as Ghanaians seemed to resist attempts to manipulate the electoral process.
The large margin of MPs from the opposition side is presented as a clear signal of the public’s discontent and a reminder to politicians of the fragile nature of the mandate they hold.
His final point about politicians being mindful of the people’s power is a cautionary message about the accountability of leaders to the electorate.
