The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has reaffirmed his office’s commitment to retrieving misappropriated state funds under the “Operation Recover All Loot” initiative.
Speaking at a press briefing, he provided updates on the legal actions being pursued, particularly concerning the controversial Sky Train project.
According to Dr. Ayine, investigations have revealed that $2 million was paid at the request of Prof. Ameyaw Ekumfi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), and its CEO, Solomon Asamoah.
The payment, which has become a subject of scrutiny, is part of ongoing efforts to track and recover funds allegedly misused in state-backed projects.
Dr. Ayine disclosed that Solomon Asamoah initially left Ghana on February 2nd, traveling to South Africa before relocating to Senegal, where he is currently staying.
The Attorney General’s office has been monitoring his movements and made contact with him. However, Asamoah has reportedly stated that he will not return to Ghana for at least three months.
“It reminds me very much of Ken Ofori-Atta,” Dr. Ayine remarked, referencing Ghana’s former Finance Minister. He added that while the government is willing to wait, it also has the legal authority to prosecute him in absentia should he fail to return voluntarily.
Meanwhile, Prof. Ameyaw Ekumfi, who is still in Ghana, is expected to face legal proceedings soon. Dr. Ayine confirmed that the prosecution process will begin, even in Asamoah’s absence.
“If there is going to be a delay due to his absence, we will start the process with the suspect who is present. As for Asamoah, he has a choice—either to return and face trial or be prosecuted in absentia,” Dr. Ayine stated.
The Sky Train project was a highly publicized initiative meant to revolutionize urban transport in Ghana, but it failed to materialize despite the significant financial commitment made by the state.
This case forms part of a broader government effort to recover funds allegedly lost to financial mismanagement and corruption.
The Attorney General and the Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine assured the public that his office remains resolute in ensuring accountability and recovering misappropriated funds and he also reiterate that more legal actions are expected in the coming months as “Operation Recover All Loot” progresses.
