Authorities in the Ashanti Region have apprehended a 16-year-old student of Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (SHS) for unlawful possession of a locally manufactured firearm. The arrest was carried out on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, following a routine dormitory inspection conducted by school officials.
According to a statement released by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Godwin Ahianyo, Head of Public Affairs for the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the discovery was made at approximately 9:30 a.m during a search aimed at ensuring student safety and compliance with school regulations.
The student, currently in his second year of SHS, was immediately detained by the Tafo Pankrono Divisional Police Command for further interrogation. During questioning, the teenager disclosed that the firearm belonged to his stepfather, Daniel Owusu Baafi. Acting on this information, police arrested Mr. Baafi on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
Initial investigations suggest that the weapon had been kept at their shared residence, but questions remain about how it ended up in the student’s possession and the intended purpose for bringing it to school.
Both the student and his stepfather were granted police inquiry bail and are required to report back to authorities on Monday, May 19, 2025, as investigations continue.
The incident has raised serious concerns about student safety and the proliferation of unregistered firearms in communities. School authorities have urged parents and guardians to be vigilant about the activities of their wards to prevent similar occurrences.
Meanwhile, law enforcement has reiterated its commitment to cracking down on illegal firearms and has appealed to the public for cooperation in maintaining peace and security.
