Tema West MCE calls for proper plan for buildings as heavy downpour destroy homes

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tema West, Ludwig Teye Totimeh during a visit to communities affected by recent torrential rains, expressed deep shock and concern over the extent of devastation caused by the flooding. The rains, which left many residents displaced and properties damaged, have been described by the MCE as “very devastating.”

Speaking to the media, the MCE attributed the severity of the impact not solely to the natural downpour but largely to human factors.
“What we have identified is, the real problem is from our human situation. People build without permits, putting up illegal structures,” he said. “This is not a result of proper planning.”

The MCE emphasized the importance of seeking professional advice from the Assembly before putting up any building or structure. He noted that many of the affected structures are illegal and do not contribute to the municipality through property rate payments.

“This should be a wake-up call. Before you put up a building or structure, come to our office for advice. Our engineers are available to guide you. These illegal structures are not only unsafe but also block drainage systems, worsening the flooding situation,” he added.

In response to the crisis, the MCE announced that engineers from the Assembly would begin immediate work to open and clear blocked drains. Additionally, the Assembly is collaborating with officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to bring relief items to affected residents.

“We are here with NADMO officials, and in the shortest possible time, we will provide relief items to those affected. While we address their immediate needs, we are also working on a lasting solution to completely resolve the flooding issues in Tema West,” the MCE assured.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tema West, Ludwig Teye Totimeh reiterated its commitment to enforcing building regulations and ensuring that all future developments in the municipality adhere to proper planning standards.
