Ghana National Fire Service Faces Critical Shortage of Essential Equipment

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is facing a critical shortage of essential equipment, including recovery tracks, pickups, and Personal Protective Devices (PPDs).

This lack of equipment is severely hindering their ability to respond effectively to emergencies and provide adequate assistance.

The situation is dire, with over half of the country’s fire trucks out of service due to mechanical and electrical issues.

A staggering 133 vehicles are currently unavailable, leaving many communities vulnerable in the event of a fire or other emergency.

The Public Relation Officer of Ghana National Fire Service, Mr. Alex King Nartey, has appealed to the Government for support, emphasizing the urgent need for these provisions.

The GNFS requires substantial investment in new equipment and maintenance to improve their firefighting readiness and ensure the safety of Ghana’s citizens.

Some of the affected regions include:

Oti and Upper East regions*: No functioning fire trucks are available in these regions.

Volta and Upper West regions*: Extensive mechanical failures have been reported across their fleets.

Greater Accra Region*: Nearly 60% of fire trucks are unavailable, leaving areas like Adenta, Tema Township, and the National Headquarters with minimal resources.
