President John Dramani Mahama has admitted the difficulty of fulfilling his commitment to appoint only 60 ministers, given the overwhelming number of CVs submitted by hopeful candidates.
Speaking at the Presidential Dinner in Accra on Wednesday, January 8, Mahama underscored the importance of assembling a competent team capable of delivering on promises made to the Ghanaian people.
“I have hit the ground running,” he said. “Today, I held several meetings with key multilateral and bilateral partners to explore ways to kick-start initiatives that will improve the lives of our people, address economic challenges, and more. I expect everyone involved to show the same level of commitment.”
Mahama acknowledged the high expectations for a leaner government and the tough decisions required to meet this goal.
“You wouldn’t want to be in my shoes when you’ve promised to appoint only 60 ministers, yet thousands of people are submitting their CVs. It means some people will inevitably be disappointed,” he remarked.
However, he reassured the public that the success of his administration depends on collective effort, not just ministerial appointments.
“The success of this administration will lay the foundation for another term, perhaps under a different leader. But we must get this right so Ghanaians can continue to have confidence in us,” Mahama stressed.
He emphasized the need to learn from the mistakes of the previous administration, warning against arrogance, incompetence, and ignoring the concerns of citizens.
“Ghanaians punished the NPP for their arrogance, incompetence, and refusal to listen to the cries and challenges of the people. There’s no point in fighting for political power if we’re going to repeat their mistakes. That’s why I’m being deliberate and cautious in my decisions,” Mahama concluded.
His remarks reflect a commitment to forming a government that prioritizes efficiency, accountability, and responsiveness to the needs of Ghanaians.
