The government plans to deploy 10 large-capacity Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses back onto Accra’s roads within a day or two, aiming to alleviate the city’s deepening public transport crisis.
Commuters have faced mounting challenges recently, including long queues and surging fares, especially during rush hours. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State for Government Communications, shared this update on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show today, Friday, January 16. He explained that the Transport Ministry has directed swift repairs for the buses, previously sidelined by breakdowns.
“He has ordered that they should be fixed quickly, so we expect that in a matter of a day or two, they should be back on the road—about 10 large-capacity buses belonging to MMT. We believe that this will ease the situation a lot,” Kwakye Ofosu said.
This follows weeks of hardship for riders in Greater Accra areas like Madina, Amasaman, and Kasoa, where wait times stretched and fares spiked amid the December 2025 holiday rush. While the government temporarily added about 40 buses from the State Transport Company (STC) for relief, some drivers soon resumed exploitative practices, spurring the push to revive the MMT fleet.
The buses’ return should cut congestion, boost efficiency, and offer real respite to weary travellers in the capital. Separately, Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang will visit the Ministry of Transport today to address ongoing sector issues, zeroing in on Greater Accra.
