John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Candidate, has challenged President Akufo-Addo to uphold his own standard and step down, citing the drastic depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.
Mr. Mahama questioned why Akufo-Addo hasn’t resigned now that the cedi has hit 17 GH to 1 USD, reminding the audience that, years ago, Akufo-Addo—then a candidate himself—had called for Mahama’s resignation when the rate was 2 GH to 1 USD.
Speaking to a crowd in Bimbilla as part of his three-day tour of the Northern Region, John Mahama pointed out the irony of Akufo-Addo’s earlier statements:
“Nana Akufo-Addo once said under President Kufuor, the cedi was 1 GH to 1 USD, and when the NDC took over, it was 2 GH to 1 USD. But today, 1 USD is 17 GH. I want to ask him—when will he resign?”
He Mahama also expressed concerns about Akufo-Addo’s efforts to position his vice president as his successor, suggesting it’s a tactic to avoid accountability for his administration’s actions.
“He wants to impose his vice president on Ghanaians to escape responsibility,” Mahama remarked. “Who are you to decide who should inherit power?”
In a pledge to restore accountability, John Mahama vowed to reclaim state properties and funds he claims were misappropriated.
“Anyone who has looted state resources will answer for it,” he promised, asserting that a new NDC administration would work to restore public trust and integrity in governance.
