We were charitable to ‘sacked’ workers, over 1,200 were to be sacked – MMT Board Chairman.

The Board Chairman of the Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT), Ahmed Arthur has stated on Ahotor FM’s morning Show with host Onantefour Addea Mununkum on Wednesday, 4th April that management was very charitable to sacked workers.

According to him, the company faces a lot of challenges which can collapse it entirely.

He reiterated that most of their buses are in a deplorable state which has reduced patronage, in addition to their worries the company is also over staffed.

50 workers of the company were sent home by the Board Chairman for reporting to work late on Tuesday.

The Board Chair Ahmed Arthur was left with shock as he observed poor work ethics within the yard when he paid an unannounced visit to the facility.

“We face a big problem which necessitated the laying off of over 1,200 workers but looking at the huge numbers and the families that will be affected, management and myself decided on measures to maintain serious once”

“I had a meeting with some bus suppliers at our office at 9:00am on Tuesday and had to wait for them at the yard. To my surprise most of these sacked workers came in after 9:00am which was unacceptable”

“I believe the Ghanaian work ethics should be changed for better productivity, I believe in good work ethics and couldn’t believe the time some of these workers came to work”

“Fortunately the drivers and conductors who receive the least of salary were not affected. Office attendants and other workers that are paid well were the most affected. This I think is unacceptable” He stated.

Ahmed Arthur concluded by stating that the company has put in place measures to discourage lateness among workers.

“A proper logging system has been put in place by the company to curb this situation”
