Timax MD Cleared in Tax Evasion Claim

The Baatsona District Police Command of the Ghana Police Service in Accra has cleared the Managing Director of Timax Development Group of any wrongdoing over allegations that he attempted to evade payment of customs duties on importation of unauthorized diesel, the police investigations revealed.

The tax evading allegations related to newspaper reports that the Timax Manager, Michael Ologo failed to pay tax of Four Hundred and Seventy Thousand (GHc 470,000) on diesel illegally imported into the country.

The Daily Graphic had reported in its June 29, 2017 edition, that Godson Akafo, the Managing Director of Western Marine Company, Michael Ologo, Managing Director of Timax Development Group and Justice Yaw Aware, Managing Director of Marine Tanker Wood Spirit all in Tema were allegedly arrested for importing diesel without authority and evading tax totalling GHc 470,000.

According to the Daily Graphic’s account, the three companies connived with some officials from Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) and the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) in the said deal.

The reportage further asserted that, Timax Development Group’s MD, Michael ologo had used his company (Timax Development Group) to apply for a permit from the NPA for it to discharge sludge from the Tema Port.

But police investigations, said its report found that Michael Ologo had no links with the importer(s) and dealer(s) of the diesel.

Police investigations shows that Gilbert Afoh had forged the documents of Timax Development Group to apply to the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) on May 17, 2017 and was received by NPA on 22nd May 2017.

Documents sighted by The Hawk revealed that Gilbert Afoh (the impersonator) applied to the NPA for authorization to discharge sludge from the Tema Port from M T Wood Spirit which was carrying the said aqueous oil at the time.

In a telephone conversation with Michael Ologo, he told the Hawk that his company had not involved itself or connived with any company in the said transaction and neither had they invaded tax.

‘Timax is a waste dislodging company situated at Tema Port. We don’t buy or sell diesel. And we have not authorized anyone to either use our documentation on our behalf for any such transaction nor have we permitted any individual to hold him/herself as an agent or assigns of Timax’, a worried Ologo said.

Police sources say after Afoh was arrested upon tip off near Tema, they found documents of Timax Development Group in his possession.
