The “Police Are Unprofessional” – COYAS

The police intervention between the youth of Mafia, a farming community in the western region and some Chinese citizens who are engaging in illegal mining, has been described by some of the residence as unethical and unprofessional. a pressure group calling itself the Concern Youth Association Of Sefwi (COYAS) has come out to condemn the act of brutalities from the Ghana police service.

According to Mr. Godwin Ahi, the spokesperson for the group, it is against the ethics of the police profession to act in such manner.

“As a result of this surveillance abuse, force arrests and intimidation on the part of the police, children are afraid to go school because their parents are seeking refuge elsewhere; teachers are not ready to go teach because they don’t want to lose their life. However, schools in sefwi Mafia have been closed down.

This cannot happen in a society like ours where police is functioning in accordance with the principles of the constitution of the republic”.

The Concern Youth Association of Sefwi (COYAS) is therefore calling for the release of the youth that have been detained with immediate effects. However, they are also calling on the President H.E Nana Akuffo Addo, the Inspector General of Police COP David Asante Apeatu, the Western Regional Minister Hon. Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, Honorable member of parliament for Juaboso constituency Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the district police command and the district security council and all the opinion leaders to intervene with immediate effect to provide a lasting solution to illegal “galamsey” operations in the area.
