Taxi driver assaulted police officer–Police investigations reveal

Preliminary Investigations by the police have revealed that the taxi driver who was alleged to have been beaten and stripped naked by a police officer at Anyaa in Accra, verbally assaulted the officer. According to the Public Affairs Director at the Police headquarters, Superintendent Cephas Arthur, the taxi driver, Kwabena Danso, insulted the officer, Gabriel Tabri, after he was confronted for allegedly jumping red traffic light.

“Our preliminary investigations revealed that the taxi driver, when confronted for jumping the red traffic light at Palas Town junction, flared up and told the officer to ‘go way with his stupid issues’,” he said.Hurt by those words, Gabriel Tabri attempted to arrest the taxi driver but he (Kwabena Danso) resisted arrest and asked his colleague in the taxi to drive it away.“The driver got down and gave his ignition key to his companion in the car and asked him to drive the car away. He (the policeman) held the driver’s pair of trousers by the waist, but the driver wrested himself free to escape by tearing it,”

“He subsequently held the driver’s top dress but he (the driver) tore that one also to free himself,” Mr Arthur narrated.

Angered by the move, he said, Kwabena Danso removed Gabriel Tabri’s police cap and threw it on the ground.

Mr Arthur said the taxi driver immediately after the act, jumped onto a motorbike and sped off.

According to him, the police were still conducting investigations into the matter and would finally come up with their report soon.
