Russia elections: Putin takes lead at the polls

The elections which have been observed in Russia has indicated that, the current President Vladmir Putin is in the lead with about 72% ahead of the other competitors for the Kremlin, the official residence of the sitting President of the country.

According to reports from the polls, the 65% of the vote casts, mostly in the eastern part of the country has put President Putin ahead of his second runner up, Pavel Grudinin, of the communist party who holds 15% while Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who first ran against Boris Yeltsin in 1991, rounds out the top three.

President Putin took over as President for Russia from the first ever popularly elected President, Boris Yeltsin and changed the broken economy of the country when President Yeltsin resigned from office.

He came to office as Prime Minister in the year 2000 till 2008 and then became the President of the country from May 7 2012.
