More than 57 houses at Zabzugu in the Northern Region have been destroyed by a rainstorm which occurred on Friday, April 21, following which tens of people have been rendered homeless.
Many houses in the affected areas also had their roofs ripped off by the rainstorm.
The Zabzugu District Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr Zakaria Yahaya, told the Daily Graphic that the incident, which lasted for 45 minutes, occurred at about 6:15 p.m.
He said the rainstorm also affected the Zabzugu Market and added that NADMO was still assessing the situation in the affected areas.
He said most of the victims were now putting up with family members, relatives, and friends.
When contacted, the Assembly Member for the Langeli Electoral Area, one of the worst affected areas in the Zabzugu town, Mr Iddrisu Lukeman, said: “I have never seen such destruction in this area before”.
“Many people now can’t find a place to sleep,” he said, adding: “The destruction was massive.”
According to Mr Lukeman, many other communities in the area were also affected.
He said the belongings of the affected persons, particularly foodstuffs, were also destroyed.
Mr Lukeman appealed to the government to come to the aid of the affected individuals.
