Police caution and release Hajia Fati over journalist assault

Hajia Fati, a vociferous supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who attacked a journalist at the party’s headquarters in Accra last Friday has been cautioned and released pending police investigations.

According to the Director General of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, ACP David Eklu, investigations in the assault case was ongoing after a complaint was lodged at the Nima Police Station.

The journalist, Charity Ohemaa Sakyiwaa with Multimedia Group, was slapped when she attempted taking a photo of Hajia Fati at the NPP headquarters whilst on assignment there.

Hajia Fati was at the party office to protest and prevent Sammy Crabbe, a suspended Vice Chairman of the party from picking nomination forms to contest for the party’s upcoming national executive elections.

In subsequent radio and TV inerviews, Hajia Fati explained that she thought the reporter was a member of Sammy Crabbe’s camp who had been sent to take pictures for ulterior motives.

According to her, the reporter looked like an “onion seller” rather than a journalist.

ACP Eklu confirming the police action in a radio interview with Accra based Citi FM said though Hajia Fati was invited for interrogation, she was subsequently “cautioned and released.”
