PNC will raise vigilante group – Atik Mohammed

The People’s National Convention (PNC) has threatened to raise a vigilante group to provide security for its national officers.

PNC General Secretary, Atik Mohammed, said the party will not allow the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) to have monopoly over these groups.

Speaking at a programme held by the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) in Accra Monday, he said if vigilante groups of the two dominating parties have been accepted, the PNC’s should also be accepted.

Activities of vigilante groups largely linked to the NDC and NPP continue to raise concerns in the country.

These groups namely the Azorka Boys of the NDC and Invincible Forces the NPP swing to action after their party is voted into power.

In July 2015, the Azorka Boys and Bolga Bulldogs clashed during a bye-election at Talensi in the Upper East Region.

Hours after the NPP was declared winner of the 2016 presidential poll, some members of the Invincible Forces took control of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to provide security for the place.

Also last Friday, another NPP-linked group, Delta Forces, massed up at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to drive out the newly appointed Regional Security Coorinator, George Agyei.

The group contends he played no role in the struggle to bring the NPP into power and has suggested that he should be removed without delay.

Last Saturday, the police in Kumasi released a statement confirming the arrest of Delta Force ‘Commander’ Kwadwo Bamba.

But the PNC said it will not allow the NPP and NDC to enjoy the protection of these groups.

Mr Mohammed said they will consult their branches to help raise the vigilante group for the protection of the PNC’s interest.

However, a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana Political Science Department has cautioned the PNC against forming the group.

Kwesi Jonah said available research proves it takes more resources to maintain a vigilante, adding it will not be in the interest of the PNC to do that.
