Parliament must reject Ghana-US agreement – GIGS

The Ghana Institute of Governance and Security (GIGS) is urging Parliament and Ghanaian government to reject a proposition for the establishment of a supposed US military base in Ghana warning of dire consequences for Ghanaians and the country as a whole

According to GIGS, the implication of the agreement is that if allowed to be passed by Parliament, could endanger the peace of the country.

“We want to warn the government that, this agreement will undermine National Security and sovereignty for which if compromised, its repercussion on Ghana will be severe beyond repairs”

“GIGS is appalled by the revelation of the agreement and wonders whether the Defense Minister understands the implications of the agreement which has been approved by Cabinet of Ghana”, its Executive Director, David Agbee stated in a release copied.

“We have sadly also taken note of the Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul’s confirmation of the agreement and the memo to Parliament for its ratification”, he said.

“GIGS believes that if the agreement stands, Ghana’s territorial boundary will be extremely exposed to dangerous threats and an extension of an invitation to potential enemies for destabilization”

The setting up of US military base, in whatever form the Defense Minister would want Ghanaians to believe he added, greatly undermines the government’s appreciation of Defense Policy.

“The fact that most African countries have rejected the US’ attempt to set up a military base in those countries, speaks volumes about the dangers associated with hosting a US military base, which would easily make Ghana a target for terrorists”, he stressed.
