Odinga’s ‘swearing in’ is a dark spot in Africa’s Democracy – Ofosu-Ampofo

“Odinga’s swearing in as the ‘people’s president’ in Kenya is one of the dark spots in Africa’s democracy. Our own acts as Africans give chance to the western world to describe us in an unacceptable manner” This was the statement made by the Vice chairman of National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu- Ampofo on Ahotor FM’s Morning Show.

According to him, Kenyans opposition leader Raila Odinga’s struggle to power has a deed rooted history which started from his father, Odinga Odinga.

The struggle between him and the current president, Uhuru Kenyatta also has an ethical undertone. Speaking with Onantefour Addae-Mununkum on February 1, Ofosu-Ampofo also stated that the tribal dimensions in the country led to most parts of the country not taking part of the 2017 election.

“One cannot discount the role of Odinga in the body politics of Kenya. The crowd that was present at his mock swearing in was a huge number. Uhuru Kenyatta must be tactful on his approach in solving this situation. The government should not use cohesive force in handling the situation to reduce it from escalating”

“I can say whatever support Odinga had in other nations will dwindle because of this act”, He stated.

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga who boycotted the country’s disputed election last year, swore himself in as the “people’s president” at a mock inauguration ceremony Tuesday in protest against President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Thousands of opposition supporters gathered at Uhuru Park in central Nairobi, chanting slogans and waving tree branches at the symbolic “swearing-in” event, which was organized by Odinga’s National Super Alliance (NASA).

The event was largely peaceful, and the throngs of supporters quickly left the park after proceedings had concluded. In what appear to be an isolated incident, police fired tear gas to try to disperse crowds pulling down signs near the park.
