MP Reveals Gov’t, UG Will Jointly Run UG Medical Centre

Management of the University of Ghana and government will jointly run the university’s $217 million Medical centres.

This was disclosed by the Member of Parliament for the Adentan constituency, Yaw Buaben Asamoah.

Confusion over who manages the health centre has led to a delay in operationalising it although the first phase of the facility had been completed and commissioned by former President, John Mahama close to two years now.

Speaking on, The Big Issue on Saturday, the Adentan MP said: “I understand that the university and government are going to run it jointly.”

“The [interim] board is made up of the University of Ghana and government nominees. That shouldn’t have been a problem in the first place,” he added.

Citi FM had earlier mounted pressure on the government to open the facility because there were reports that it could commence operations while efforts are put in place to complete the second phase.

There were reports also to the effect that the facility had a healthy state of the art equipment already installed.

Some civil society organisations also joined in the fray and a student of the University of Ghana, Reginald Sekyi-Brown also began a social media campaign dubbed “Open UGMC Now” to force the government to open the facility.

The government, last Thursday following the pressure, announced that it had formed an interim board to begin processes to operationalise the medical centre “with immediate effect.”

Minister of Information, Mustapha Hamid further clarified that the centre would be opened to the public by July 19, 2018 .

“Right now we are hoping that in the next week or two Members of Parliament would have ratified the loan agreement and then we can go and access the money for phase two to begin. If you ask me to give and take, by July date, we are saying the facility would be operational. We would have to access the money and begin working on phase two,” he said.
