Mason gets 10 years for possessing narcotic drugs

A 34 year old mason caught with some quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in hard labour by the Juaso Circuit Court.

Kwame Boateng, who pleaded guilty to possessing narcotic drug without authority told the court that the substance was for his personal use and that it energized him to work as a mason.

The court presided over by Mr. Yusif Asibey, however, found him guilty and sentenced him accordingly.

Police Detective Inspector Princeton Peasah Darkwah, prosecuting, said the police received information that Boateng was involved in illegal trading of narcotic drugs at Juaso.

He said a team of policemen on April 11, proceeded to his house and arrested him.

Prosecution said 12 wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp were retrieved from a bag as well as two parcels concealed in a table top fridge in his room.

He was taken to the station together with the exhibits where his cautioned statement was taken.

The convict said a young man from Nkawkaw was his source of supply but failed to provide his name, location and telephone number.
