Kofi Adda ‘Ada’- Ofosu-Ampofo

The Vice Chairman of Opposition Party National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu- Ampofo has lashed out at the Minister for sanitation and Water Resources, Joseph Kofi Adda, stating that the current water crisis, bedeviling the country is as a result of his inability to curtail the situation, stating that he is sleeping on his job.

“I know the minister, Kofi Adda very well and I can say he is a competent person, an economist and planner but the president has put him in the wrong ministry and I can say “wada” (he is asleep)” he stated.

Speaking on the Thursday’s edition of Ahotor FM’s morning show, the Vice Chairman further stated that water shortage has been in existence before Ghana Water Company Limited came out with official statement on the situation.

“The current water shortage is only a paradox and I think the current situation is as a result of the minister’s inability to contain the situation. Water is life and we use it for our everyday life activity”

“The former president, John Dramani Mahama increased the water coverage throughout the country from 58.5% urban, 41% rural to 78% urban, 76.5% rural. This achievement made Ghana one of the countries in the sub Sahara to have wide water coverage”

“President Mahama provided the water destination plant which was intended to serve the people around the Accra coastal areas, Teshie- Nungua, with portable water which was the desalination plant. He also increased dramatically the water situation around Adenta and neighboring suburbs”

“I really disagree with the assertion made by the Ghana water company limited, claiming Galamsey activities are the course of the shortage. The current NPP government has stated that it has stopped the activities of galamsay so I am surprise these accretions are being made by the company” He stated.

The vice chairman continued by saying that he is skeptical about the explanation made by the Ghana water company limited and he believes that this crisis is as a result of the incompetent handling of the government and state institutions of the water situation in the country

The Communications Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Stanley Mantey stated that the rate of evaporation of water bodies across the country has become alarming and unless there is rain, there will be consequences for some communities.

While blaming bad farming practices, illegal felling of trees and galamsey activities, the water company spokesperson said if the rains do not come soon enough in Yendi, the river, which is their only source of water, will evaporate completely.
