Judiciary appointments not politicised – Sophia Akuffo

The Chief Justice nominee Sophia Akuffo has dismissed claims that appointments in the Judiciary are highly politicised.

Appointments to the Supreme Court and the position of the Chief Justice by presidents have been described as political by many.

But speaking at the Appointments Committee Friday, the Supreme Court Judge using herself as an example said the notion that appointments are based on political leanings is wrong and should not be encouraged.

“Maybe I am an example that it is not, I was appointed by Jerry John Rawlings and now I have been nominated by Akufo-Addo and these are presidents from the different political divides but unfortunately everything in this country has been politicized,” the 67-year-old said.

The Chief Justice nominee Justice Sophia Akuffo has promised to leave a legacy that will ensure every Ghanaian feels secured to resort to the courts to settle disputes.

She said her utmost priority in terms of vision is to produce “quality judges” who will resort to technology to dispense justice to all

She also described lawyers advertising on social media as distasteful and a breach of the laws and ethics of the profession.
