I will not forget expectations of Ghanaians — Prez-elect

The President-elect, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has said he would never forget the expectations of Ghanaians that informed the vote for change in the December 7 polls.

Nana Akufo-Addo, was addressing a special durbar of the chiefs and people of the Volta Region to celebrate the election of the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, as the President of the National House of Chiefs.

He said an election was a compact between those who voted and those they voted for.

“I promise you we shall give our side of the compact. We shall keep our promises,” he assured.

Modernise the chieftaincy institution

He told Togbe Afede that he was in a great position to help modernise the chieftaincy institution, saying, “You come to the position with great credentials. I will do the best on my part to offer the needed support to chieftaincy institutions at all levels to help enhance the governance of our nation.”

He said chiefs occupied a special place in the Ghanaian society and in the hearts of the people, placing them in a unique position to make invaluable contributions to the governance mechanism of the country.

“They represent all that we hold sacred. You are the custodians of our customs and our traditions. Ghanaians know what our chiefs stand for and they give you their unalloyed respect,” he added.

Commenting on the election, he said, admittedly, the results of the region fell short of the expectations of many but added that certainly, the party had done far better than it did at the last election.

“We even have a parliamentary seat and the votes of the NPP presidential garnered went up to almost 18 per cent of the votes in this region,” Nana Akufo-Addo noted, adding that that feat was unprecedented.

NPP to woo the Volta Region

“I recall the statement made by you during my last visit. You said the Volta Region was not a loyal housewife waiting for a husband who only came home when he was hungry. You said the Volta Region was a beautiful bride awaiting an appropriate suitor. The NPP has taken you at your word and we will continue to woo the Volta Region until we marry the bride,” he said.

He said the world had saluted the peaceful and dignified manner in which the Ghanaian people exercised their sovereign power on December 7.

“It has enhanced the image of our country. We are to put our shoulders to the wheel as united people, work hard and we will achieve the prosperity that we all want. We can do it; let us do it together,” he mentioned.

Togbe Afede’s resolve

Togbe Afede, for his part, indicated that his election to lead the chieftaincy institution and that of Nana Addo to lead the country was a divine providence for the two of them to work together to ensure development and prosperity for every Ghanaian.
