GPL week 8 review: Hearts break Kotoko Jinx

Accra Hearts of Oak ended an eight-year wait for a league victory over Asante Kotoko in Accra, with a 1:0 win over their arch rivals.

Defender Vincent Atinga was the hero of the afternoon as he scored the only goal of the match.

The tight match appeared to be ending in a stalemate, until referee Samuel Sukah  adjudged a Kotoko defender to have handled the ball in the box seven notes or time, and awarded a penalty to Hearts of Oak.

It was a nerve-racking moment, particularly for the Phobians, but Vincent Atinga showed great composure and converted the spot kick, which gave Hearts their first league win win over Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium in eight years.

The defeat ruined a great opportunity for Kotoko to overtake Aduana Stars who slipped up in Cape Coast on Saturday.

Ebusua Dwarfs ended their unbeaten record of with a 2:1 victory. Star man, Nicholas Gyan and Osman Mohammed gave Dwarfs a 2:0 lead before Mohammed reduced the deficit for Aduana.

Aduana Stars had not lost in their previous seven matches and the defeat left them in danger of losing their number one position on the table, but Kotoko could not capitalize.

Elmina Sharks continued their impressive debut season in the Premier League with a 1:0 win over Ashantigold. Tetteh Nortey scored the only goal of the match through a penalty.

Bolga All Stars registered their second home win of the season, by defeating Bechem United 2:1 in Bolga. Hafiz Wontah Konkoni and Maxwell Frimpong scored for Bolga All Stars, while Eric Owusu Gyamfi got Bechem’s game.

In Sogakope, WAFA continued their impressive home form with a 2:0 over Berekum Chelsea. Emmanuel Boateng and Komlan Agbeniadan got the goals for WAFA.

Liberty Professionals and Wa All Stars settled for a 0:0 draw in Dansoman, while Medeama’s recent winless run continued with a 1:1 home draw with Accra Great Olympics. Bismark Oppong.

Inter Allies will host Tema Youth at the El Wak Stadium in Accra to complete the week eight fixtures.
