Father of six remanded for robbery

A 33-year-old taxi driver and father of six, Yaw Amponsah, has been remanded in custody by the Kumasi Circuit Court for allegedly robbing one Jemima Prempeh of her phone valued at GH¢500.00.

His accomplice, Kwadwo Ofori, has however, absconded and is being searched for by the police.

He is alleged to have robbed Jemima of her LG mobile phone at gunpoint at Kotei.

Amponsah pleaded not guilty to the two counts of conspiracy to commit crime and committing crime, and was remanded in custody by the court, presided over by Mr Ekow Mensah.

The facts of the case as presented by Inspector Christine Bettey were that on February 6, at about 7 p.m., the Domeabra District and Ejisu Divisional commands of the Ghana Police Service received distress calls about an armed robbery case on the Apromase-Kokoben trunk road.

Inspector Bettey said when the police got to the scene, the robbers had fled. The police, however, proceeded to the adjoining towns where the suspect was arrested at Deduako.

When the accused was searched, a phone which the complainant later identified as hers was found on him.

The accused was alleged to have admitted to the offence in his caution statement to the police.
