Explosion at Takoradi leaves several injured

A number of people are said to have been injured after a gas explosion at a company in Sekondi-Takoradi Tuesday morning.

Ghumco, a utensils manufacturing company was said to be receiving liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from a tanker when the explosion occurred.

The tanker split into two, flipped over and landed in a wetland close by.

According to Graphic Online’s Takoradi reporter, Koblah Dotsey Aklorbortu, fire from the explosion destroyed items at the Chinese-owned Ghumco Company and extended to the nearby OLAM Ghana warehouse, completely destroying everything on site including; rice, oil and flour.

The first five firemen and early responders were caught up in the blaze and have been sent to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital for treatment.

A number of other people said to have sustained burns have also been sent to the same hospital.

Vehicular traffic on the main Sekondi-Takoradi highway has been diverted to the Effiakuma and Effia road.

Firemen are still on the ground battling the blaze.
