EC beats retreat; postpones voting in Jaman North Constituency

The Electoral Commission (EC) has postponed voting in polling stations in the Jaman North Constituency in the Brong Ahafo Region to Thursday.

EC Director of Communications, Eric Dzakpasu says the decision was reached after a security assessment of the area was carried out by the District Security Council.

“DISEC said it was late so because of security issues the EC has postponed the polls,” he told Joy News, Wednesday.

It was reported in the media that the District EC officials have called off voting in the constituency over a discrepancy with the voter’s register.

Representatives of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) were first to question the number of voters on the list. They claimed the EC list is irreconcilable with the one given them ahead of the polls.

The list has been bloated with 23 names of persons who transferred their votes to exercise their franchise in the constituency, the NDC agents said.

This resulted in a series of meetings with EC officials with political party representatives, after which they reached an agreement by consensus that the names should be expunged from the register and polls postponed to Thursday.

Deputy EC Communication Director, Yussif Ayuba had said no one but the EC boss, Charlotte Osei has the right to postpone voting in the country.

But in a surprising development, the EC has announced the postponement of voting in the entire constituency because DISEC said it could not provide security for all the 92 polling stations.

Mr Dzakpasu explained the Commission directed the continuation of the exercise in the constituency because the District officers gave the assurance that the issues faced in the district have been amicably addressed.

“As a result of security issues, polls will go on tomorrow [Thursday] as scheduled,” he said.

Asked if the decision will not delay declaration of the overall results, Mr Dzakpasu said the Commission has about 72 hours to declare the winner of the presidential election and will stick to that.
