Drivers want BOST MD to step aside

Members of the True Drivers Union, a group comprising of commercial vehicle drivers, have called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to instruct the Managing Director of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST), Mr Obeng Boateng, to step aside for thorough investigations into the sale of some fuel to BB Energy.

This comes on the heels of claims by the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers, Ghana (COPEC-Ghana) that Ghana lost in excess of GHS23 million in revenue from a transaction BOST had with BB Energy.

The losses, COPEC insists, were recorded from the sale of some 1.8 million barrels of crude oil.

According to COPEC, BOST could have made more profit if it had done proper negotiations.

Commenting on the issue, Spokesperson for the True Drivers Union, Yaw Barima, explained on Monday, 19 March 2018, that issues concerning fuel affect commercial vehicle drivers.

Ibrahim Obeng-Mensah in an interview that fuel prices are high, authorities are not willing to reduce the prices yet BOST chose to hoard that quantity of fuel only to go and sell it at cheap prices and that should be questioned.

He pointed out that BOST sold volumes of contaminated fuel several months back and the destination is still not known. For him, there is high possibility of such fuels being bought and used by commercial vehicles leading to the damage of the engines of the cars.

He indicated that for BOST to be involved in numerous questionable activities including the recent GHS23million saga demands temporal suspension of the company’s MD until the cases have been probed.

“One scandal was the contaminated fuel, as we speak, we do not know where it is and commercial drivers are the ones who may end up buying and it’ll destroy our engines. So, we are in support of COPEC for the recent sales to be investigated. We are pleading with Nana, as he boarded a ‘trotro’ (commercial vehicle) to assure us that drivers will be comfortable after he takes office, he should speak with Mr Obeng to step aside and order a probe into the matter else he (President Akufo-Addo) should not come and tell us that he is not corrupt,” Mr Barima stated.
