Clearing agents demonstrate against paperless policy implementation

Freight Forwarders at the Tema Port Friday morning demonstrated against the implementation of the paperless process at the country’s port.

According to the group, sensitisation on the paperless process which started today has been poorly done.

The group was made up of members of the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF), the Chamber of Freight and Trade and Concerned Freight Forwarders Association.

“How do you pilot a project when agents who are the main users have no idea of how the processes are going to work”, Mr Oheneba Kwasi Afawuah, Chairman for Concerned Freight Forwarders queried.

“We demand that government withdraws the implementation plan, put in place the necessary sensitisation and ensure the end users are abreast of the project before they take off”, Mr Afawuah stated.

The group is also accusing a Deputy Minister of Finance, Mr Kwaku Kwarteng of pushing for the introduction of a tax stamp policy which would require that imports cleared at the ports would  require a third party stamping code at the cost of the importer before they are allowed into the market.

The say the policy which was previously introduced and withdrawn by the previous government would go to add to an increase cost to importers.
