Bui: 8 missing from boat accident

The chances of finding any of the eight people feared to have drowned at Accra Town near the Bui Hydro Dam in the Brong Ahafo region, have slimmed after a search and rescue team returned Saturday, without any hope.

A boat which was carrying 33 people capsized in the reservoir of the Bui Hydro Dam on Friday. The Ghana Navy rescued 25 out of the 33 people who were on-board the boat near the upstream village of the dam called Accra Town.

The boat was said to have developed a fault with its outboard motor.

The Public Relations Manager at the Bui Power Authority (BPA), Mr Chery Lawson-Adamu told Accra based radio station Joy FM that the Navy returned late Saturday afternoon with no traces of the missing persons except the wrecked boat with dead animals.

“The Navy went there this morning and searched the whole day but they saw nothing except wrecked boat with dead animals in it,” Mr Lawson – Adamu stated.

He however said the Navy would be dispatched to the scene of the accident again on Sunday for their usual patrol.

“It is very unlikely they will find any of the eight persons alive as no human being can survive beyond 30 minutes underwater” he said.

The Bui Dam is a 400-megawatt hydroelectric project built on the Black Volta river at the Bui Gorge, at the southern end of Bui National Park.
