Akufo-Addo leaves Ghana for commonwealth meeting in London

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo left Accra last Saturday to attend the 25th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in London, United Kingdom.

The meeting which will take place from Monday to Friday on the theme “Towards a Common Future,” will afford the heads of government the opportunity to “address the shared global challenges we face, and agree actions on how to create a better future for all.”

Meetings

A statement signed by the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Mr Eugene Arhin said President Akufo-Addo would, on the sidelines of the event, hold meetings with the British Foreign Secretary, Mr Boris Johnson; the leader of the Labour Party, Mr Jeremy Corbyn; the Mayor of London, Mr Sadiq Khan; and the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William.

It said the President would also deliver the keynote address at the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce Investment Summit, speak at the Malaria Summit hosted by Bill Gates, and attend the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council of Business Forum.

It added that on Saturday, April 21, 2018, the President would deliver the keynote speech at the London School of Economics’ Africa Summit on the theme “Africa at Work: Educated, Employed and Empowered”.

Delegation

President Akufo-Addo was accompanied by the First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo; the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Ms Shirley Ayokor-Botchway; the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Alan Kyeremanten; Ms Otiko Afisa Djaba; the Minister for Business Development, Mt Mohammed Ibrahim Awal and other officials.

The President, according to the statement, is expected back home on Sunday, April 22, 2018.

In a related statement the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration said the meeting would be held on the following sub-themes: fairer future, a more prosperous future, a more sustainable future and a more secure future.

It said a Pre-CHOGM Foreign Ministers meeting would be held prior to the meeting with a leaders retreat to take place on Friday, April 20, 2018.
