The Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem Nursing Training School in the Ashanti Region is the scene of some agitation against the Tafo Municipal Assembly (TMA) following allegations of excessive force used on some students.

As Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) comes to terms with an indefinite closure after student protests against alleged brutalities turned violent, the Nursing School’s Student Representative Council (SRC) has said some Assembly personnel stormed the school and manhandled some students after a query concerning sanitation issues.

The SRC President, Linda Acheampong, said one student was left with some injuries after the incident and is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

She narrated that after a clinical session, they went to the MCE’s office over the sanitation issues to meet an official.

“Unfortunately for us, we couldn’t meet him [the official]. On our way out, we met the [TMA] people. They attacked us with our director.”

Linda Achampong recalled that she was left in a state of confusion over the confrontation.

“I didn’t know what was going on so they took our director and they held me. They even folded my dress. I was in a uniform and they folded it.”

The Assembly personnel eventually left her and a few others because they were students, but still had the director in their custody.

According to the SRC president, there was even more chaos awaiting them when they got back to the school.

“When we came to school, we saw that they came here with people and they had beaten a lot of students mercilessly and it was getting serious and we didn’t know what to do. They came in and spoiled our gate. They bashed into the girls’ hostel and it was really bad.”
