An Accountant at the Western Regional Office of the Nurses and Midwifery Council has embezzled GH¢115,882.00.

Gilbert Kwasi Mensah Addison, who forged pay-in slips to steal the money, told the police he used the money to build a garage, a living room and a store room.

He allegedly failed to fully account for revenue collected on behalf of the Council between May 2013 and December 2014.

The Registrar of the Nurses and Midwifery Council, Mr Felix Nyanteh, told the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament’s sitting in Accra on Wednesday that the matter had been reported to the police and action had been taken.

Docket

He told the PAC that the docket was currently with the Attorney-General (A-G) for advice.

According to Mr Nyanteh, the culprit had also been dismissed by the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department.

It came to light that the head of Internal Audit at the Nurses and Midwifery Council detected the fraud.

The committee expressed worry about the delay in the prosecution of the culprit and expressed the hope that action would be taken to bring him to book.
