31st Dec Movement renamed Developing Women for Mobilisation

The 31st December Women’s Movement (DWM) has changed its name to Developing Women for Mobilisation (DWM).

The change in name also comes with a change in the character of the organisation, which has been a household name since the early 1980s, empowering women economically, socially and politically.

She said the work of the movement in empowering women had grown to such an extent that it required a bigger vehicle to carry on with it.

She said in dialogues with other organisations, the issue of the 31st DWM being a purely political organisation had come up again and again, and on that basis, most benevolent bodies were reluctant to help it in its development work.

Mrs Agyeman-Rawlings said deliberations of regional executives, therefore, led to the choice of the name Developing Women for Mobilisation.

The essence of the new name is to enable the empowerment of women for greater mobilisation and improvement in lives.

Developing Women for Mobilisation was registered in 2014.

Future

Mrs Agyeman-Rawlings said she was hopeful that a decade from the change in name, the organisation would be a great advocate of social and legal education to entrench the rights of women in Ghana and beyond.

She said the new organisation would liaise with like-minded bodies, both locally and internationally, to share best practices globally.

She also noted that the setting up of day-care centres and clinics would continue to be a principal activity of the organisation.
