2017 AFCON: Gabon appoint former Spain coach Camacho

Ahead of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations finals, hosts Gabon have hired former Spanish international and Coach Jose Antonio Camacho as their head coach.

Camacho who has majorly coached in Spain succeeds Portuguese coach Jorge Costa who was fired after a series of poor results.

Camacho has been in Libreville since last month in talks with the Gabon Football Federation (Fegafoot) president, Alain Pierre Mounguengui.

His last job was between 2011 and 2013 as the Chinese national team head coach but left after China failed to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, finishing third in the third qualifying round with three wins and three losses.

Gabon is in Group A along with Cameroon, Burkina Faso and debutants Guinea Bissau and Camacho’s immediate task will be making sure the team qualifies for the last eight.

As a player, Camacho played for 15 professional years with Real Madrid, appearing in more than 500 official games with the team and helping it to 19 major titles, including nine La Liga championships.

Camacho gained more than 80 caps with Spain, representing it in two World Cups and as many European Championships.

The former left back also managed the national team four four years, taking it to the quarterfinals in the 2002 World Cup.
